What We Do

(Program description as of 7/7/2020)

GN Baseball Academy Teams and Developmental Training Programs

Purpose: The GN Baseball Academy Teams and Developmental Training programs are two supplemental programs offered through Great Neck Baseball League (GNBL) for GNBL players. GNBL has partnered with Hampton Roads Sports Academy to ensure our players are receiving the highest level of instruction in the area.  These programs were created to help young players develop the necessary skillsets and fundamentals that will lead to success at all levels (youth to professional) of organized baseball.

The GN Baseball Academy Teams and Developmental Training programs are geared towards preparing players with the necessary strategies, skills, and conditioning in order to feed into and improve the GN All Star program, as well as, local middle and high school programs.

How: The GN Baseball Academy Teams and Developmental Training programs are being led by HRSA.  Players will be instructed and coached by professional coaches/players from the collegiate level or higher. Through a combination of structured practice, situational scrimmages, and live game situations our program will prepare athletes to thrive in a competitive environment.

Requirements: Great Neck Baseball Academy Team and Developmental Training program players will be required to register for GNBL recreation baseball in both the fall and spring. Fall recreation season play is optional for academy team players. Spring recreation season play is mandatory for academy team players. Developmental training program participants are required to register for fall and spring, but are only required to play in the spring.

Program 1: Great Neck Baseball Academy Teams This program is geared to those players who can play at a higher level and are ready for more team fundamentals and structured, focused training to hone individual skills and development.

Teams will be available for ages 8u, 9u, 10u, 11u, 12u, 13u, and 14u.

One professional coach (collegiate player or higher) will be assigned to each individual age division and be present for practices, double header game days, or tournament days.

One GN Manager will be assigned to assist the professional coach with practices, scheduling, planning, and game day operations and coordination.

Each team will carry a minimum of 10 players with a maximum of 12 players. Players will be selected by professional coaching staff in partnership with the Academy Director and GN Team Manager. * Teams may carry the option of 13 players at the discretion of professional coach, Academy Director, and GN Team Manager. *The Cooperstown team may carry up to 14 players

Players will be evaluated for GN Academy teams via a one day tryout with the option of a second day call back, if warranted. Tryouts will be conducted in mid- July for the fall season and mid-January for the spring season. As with any competitive environment, playing time will be earned and is not guaranteed.

There are two seasons for the GN Academy teams. The fall season runs from August 15-November 15. Teams will break between seasons and players will be required to tryout in the spring*. The spring season runs from February 1 through the 3rd week in May. *The Cooperstown team remains together for both fall and spring seasons and is required to sign a 1 year commitment agreement.

Each season will consist of five doubleheaders on alternating Sundays with practices on off game day weekends. A potential warm up tournament and in-season tournament may be played at discretion of individual teams.

Practices are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. -Preseason (Fall: August and Spring: February) 1 hour team practice at HRSA on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.  In Season (Fall: Sept. to Nov; Spring: Mar. to May) 2 hour team practices on Friday and Sunday.

Practices will be held outdoors at the GNBL park facility. Preseason practices and select weekday practices will be held in an indoor facility capable of accommodating 100+ players at a time and providing quality reps within designated practice times.

In the event of inclement weather, practices will be moved to the indoor training facility, however there is no guarantee for game make ups due to field availability. If game is rained out, practice / training will be moved to indoor training facility for practice.

GN Academy Team players are required to register through the Academy website, www.academygnbl.com.  Players are responsible to pay $150 per month in order to participate.  Credit Card payment though the site requires and additional $5 per month for credit card fees.  Sports Connect, which operates the website, charges a $3 services fee per transaction.   Current year amounts are $465 total for fall; $620 total for spring). Players must also register and pay for GNBL recreation baseball. Recreation ball play is optional in fall, but mandatory in spring. *Cooperstown team requires an additional Cooperstown Dream Park Experience of $1500 per player (this can be offset by fundraisers and/or area sponsorships).
